January 2018

Dear Parents / Carers

On behalf of all staff at St Mary’s I wish you a happy New Year.

It has been a hectic start to the new term.  I had just started to work closely with Stuart Wetson, the new Head Teacher, who starts after the Easter holiday, when I received a call last Wednesday to say that Ofsted would be conducting a one day inspection.

We had been expecting this short inspection for some months now and had been actively preparing for it: nevertheless, it was a shock to discover that they would be coming in the first week of term and the first few days of my term as Acting Head Teacher!

However, I am pleased to report that the inspection last Thursday (11th January) went very well and that I was pleased with the outcome.  The Ofsted team were very complimentary about our whole school community.  Unfortunately, I cannot disclose any more information at this stage until the short letter/report is made available in the next fortnight.  Once published, we will make the report accessible on the school website.  I can say at this stage that it is likely that Ofsted will return in about a year's time to check further on our progress.

I would like to express my gratitude to all of you who completed the parent questionnaire or were kind enough to ring the inspectors during the day to provide feedback on the school.  It is a difficult process because once we are informed of an inspection the questionnaire has to be completed by 11.00 am the next day, the day of the inspection itself.  I am grateful for the swift response from so many.

I would also like to thank those of you who sent messages of good luck prior to the inspection and those who enquired on Friday about the process.  I am always appreciative of your support, co-operation and interest.

Finally, I am happy to report that students and staff have made a great start to the term.  It is often remarked how difficult the autumn term can be – it is certainly the longest.  However, this term is equally busy with a number of Parents’ Evenings and an Options Evening for Year 9.  I look forward to seeing you at these events and, once again, thank you for your kind support.
