Lent 2012 Cafod Fundraising

Throughout Lent a fundraising craze swept over St. Mary’s! Cafod’s theme this year was ‘Thirst for Change’ and money raised was to support Cafod in helping get water to our brothers and sisters in the world who go without a very basic human right of clean water.

Throughout Lent a fundraising craze swept over St. Mary’s! Cafod’s theme this year was ‘Thirst for Change’ and money raised was to support Cafod in helping get water to our brothers and sisters in the world who go without a very basic human right of clean water.

Every R.E. class came to the chapel for a session about water poverty, the session began with a cracker eating completion to get them a bit thirsty, we then went outside the chapel to where I’d built a ‘well’, they were offered the water to quench their thirst! We then spent some time discussing some facts about water poverty:

  • 1 in 5 people don’t have access to clean water.

  • Every 20 seconds a child dies because of dirty water.

  • In the past 10 years, diarrhea has killed more children than all the people lost to armed conflict since World War II.

  • 80 percent of diseases in the developing world are caused by contaminated water.

  • If we did nothing other than provide access to clean water, without any other medical intervention, we could save 2 million lives a year.

The session ended with those in the same forms discussing how they could raise money for Cafod, to keep things interesting the wall at the back of the hall was turned into a bar chart to keep track of how much money the different houses had raised.

And so the fundraising began, we had a sponge the teacher, I’m a teacher get me out of here, strictly come dancing, a fancy dress day, a promise auction, a stay awake, car washing, sponsored walks, a thousand cake sales to name but a few of the fundraising efforts that took place.

A phenomenal amount of money was raised, the staff and the students worked incredibly hard and managed to raise over £5200! Virgo won our inter house competition with an incredible £1467.36.
