I am sure you all know by now that I am the new lay chaplain at St. Mary’s. Let me share with you who I am and what I would like to do for this school. First of all, I have lived in England for 8 years. I grew up in Canada and was brought up Catholic. I really didn’t discover my faith until I was 13. I was at a prayer service when I decided to give my life to Christ. This didn’t mean I had it easy. By all means my life as a teenagers had its ups and downs, but through my challenges I was able to discover who Christ was and felt that he was helping me on my way. In my early 20s I didn’t know what I wanted in my life. Should I become a nun or should I marry? What did God want me to be and where did he want me to go? At the same time I had the privilege to go to WYD in Toronto. Someone from my parish paid for me to go! It was there that God guided me and this is where I met Bill Spanjers, your former chaplain, my future sister-in law! WYD really showed me that there are lots of people, from around the world who loves JESUS! From that point on I wanted to use my faith to help others.
Now fast forward fourteen years and God has placed me where He wants me to be, which is to be a chaplain. I love it here at St. Mary’s. All the staff and students are really friendly and I feel that I belong to a family. My goal as chaplain is to serve as Christ serves. I plan to do this by being there for the staff and students and to uphold the ethos of the school, which is to live my life according to the gospel.
