Geography

WELCOME TO GEOGRAPHY:

We have 4 members of staff in the Geography department; Mrs A Hughes (head of department), Mr Paul Bayliss, Mrs Howell-Davis and Mrs H Sagers (teaching assistant).

In Year 7 you will experience a wide range of topics as shown in this diagram, including human, physical and environmental geography.  We’ll start by covering lots of map skills so we can apply these through our other topics. If you want to know where chocolate comes from and how Iphones are a global product you will really enjoy geography lessons.

Example Assignments:

 ‘Why are all world maps wrong?’ 

Research the orange peel problem. 

Identify your favourite map projection and explain why. 

 ‘Where is the best location?’

Research a local manufacturing company eg: Heineken, Tyrrells, Avara. 

Sketch a map to show where they are located. 

Suggest reasons for their location.

Trips & Activities in Geography: 

 

Orienteering around the school site.

Map tour of the village of Lugwardine.

Investigating rocks, caves and the water cycle at Dan-Yr-Ogof, National Show Caves of Wales.

Investigating river landforms by visiting Henrhyd Waterfalls in the Brecon Beacons.  

Investigating coastal processes and management at Dunraven Bay, South Wales.

Investigating tectonics at the Lapworth Geological Museum at the University of Birmingham.

 

 

What skills you develop in Geography?

      Excellent geographers:

-        use a wide ranging and accurate geographical vocabulary,

-        have a knowledge of where places are and what they are like,

-        develop an understanding of how places are interconnected,

-        are able to express themselves clearly drawing on balanced opinions,

-        can reach concise conclusions,

-        have an ability to think for themselves and ask questions,

-        are competent in using a variety of data eg: maps, graphs, tables, charts.

-        have a real sense of curiosity about the world.
