History at St Mary's

The History Department at St Mary's is dedicated to providing a comprehensive History curriculum, employing a broadly chronological narrative enriched with inquiry-based learning.

In Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9), students explore historical topics guided by engaging enquiry questions. The selection of topics studied is meticulously crafted and continuously reviewed to fulfil the objectives of our Department Intent and to adhere to the National Curriculum requirements. This allows us to develop an increasingly cohesive and well-rounded educational experience for our students, fostering a deep understanding of historical events and their significance. This curriculum equips our pupils with a robust foundation in historical knowledge and analytical skills, preparing them for academic success and fostering a lifelong appreciation for history.

GCSE History

As pupils progress to the GCSE level (Years 10 & 11), we follow the AQA GCSE History specification. Paper 1 delves into the themes of Conflict and Tension, focusing on The First World War (1894-1918) and the transformative period of Germany: Democracy to Dictatorship (1890-1945). Paper 2 broadens the scope with a thematic exploration of Health and the People (c.1000 to the present day), along with a comprehensive British depth study of Elizabethan England (c.1568-1603). GCSE History is an incredibly popular options subject at St Mary's.
