Match report: Year 8 Boys County Football Semi-Final v Whitecross HS

Our Year 8 Boys Football team put in a solid performance against a good Whitecross HS side this evening to progress through to the County Schools Cup final at Edgar Street with a hard fought 2-1 win.

St Mary’s took the lead on 8 minutes, courtesy of a James D goal, and we held the lead all the way through to half-time.

There was not much in it between the sides, with Whitecross playing some nice football out from the back, whereas we played a slightly more direct game in order to make use of the pace Noah A and Oli L.

Whitecross equalised 12 minutes into the second half, but St Mary’s response was immediate, playing the ball into the channels, and with Noah capitalising on a goal-keeping error when the Whitecross keeper’s clearance hit one of his own players, and with Noah reacting fastest to the rebound he placed the ball calmly into the net to put St Mary’s back in the driving seat.

St Mary’s managed the game really well in the final quarter, and it was the work rate of the whole team that probably got us through the periods when Whitecross were in the ascendancy, and I am sure this collective effort will be needed to come to the final.

Our thanks to Our Year 9 team managers, Tom L and Harry T, who did a great job looking after the Year 8s tonight.

Having got all 5 of our teams through to the semis, we now have 3 out of 4 teams (Year 7s, Year 11s & Year 8s) through to their respective finals at Edgar Street, and tomorrow it is the turn of our Year 9s in their semi-final.  All the talk in the media is about the ‘quadruple’………but naturally, for the boys, we just keep grounded and take one game at a time!!!!!!!
