Our mission in St Mary’s Music Department is to foster a vibrant and engaging musical environment where music is not only important but also a source of joy and practical application. We are dedicated to providing our students with comprehensive opportunities to explore their musical skills and develop their confidence in singing and playing a diverse range of instruments through a range of musical styles.

Through our hands-on approach to music education, we believe in learning by doing. Our curriculum is designed to empower students to actively engage in music-making, allowing them to discover their own unique voices and artistic expressions. Through performing, composing and listening to music, with regular performance opportunities within class and beyond, we aim to instill a deep appreciation for the power of music and the rewards of dedication and teamwork.

The Music Department at St Mary’s sets high standards for musical excellence both within the curriculum and through our programme of extra-curricular events, prioritizing the enjoyment and fulfillment that music brings. We believe in the transformative power of music education, shaping well-rounded individuals who not only develop musical proficiency but also gain valuable life skills such as discipline, perseverance, active listening skills, creativity, self-confidence and effective communication. Our students leave our department equipped with a strong foundation in music with a good record of GCSE results and students going on to study music post 16.

Through our unwavering commitment to a music program that is important, fun, and practical, we aim to ignite the spark of musical passion within every student, empowering them to become confident and skilled musicians who make meaningful contributions to the world through their love of music.
