St Mary's Students to Play in Roller Derby World Cup

Two St Mary's students, sisters Verity (9M ) and Marianne Corrick- Gough  (10M), have  been selected to play for  Team GB Junior Roller Derby and will join the squad as they fly out to Philadelphia to participate in the Junior Roller Derby Association World Cup this July.

Verity and Marianne have both been playing Roller Derby for Hereford Poison Berries Juniors for over 4 years and Marianne is the teams current Captain.  Both girls have trained hard to achieve their dream of playing for their country at the highest level. Marianne says “Keeping the balance between training for our sport and also making sure that we are achieving our academic potential means that we often have to miss out on parties and other fun events, but all of the sacrifices have been worth it. Not only will we get to represent Great Britain – but we also get to visit New York!”

Both girls have had a very successful 2017/18 season appearing at many top international events including the Men’s Roller Derby World Championships in October 2017. They were then selected to play for Team England Juniors in November 2017 where Verity led the team out in her first game as Captain.

In February this year the girls appeared on BBC Sport when their Junior European Exhibition game was broadcast live prior to the Ladies Roller Derby World Cup Final. Their Ladies World Cup experience was also captured on film by CBBC who made a short film about Marianne’s World Cup experience as part of the BBC ‘Get Inspired’ campaign.

Marianne and Verity will be joined on their trip to Philadelphia by their 16 year old sister, past St Mary’s pupil and current Hereford Sixth Form student, Amelia Corrick-Gough, who has been selected by the World Cup Officials Committee to referee at both the World Cup and The USA Championships tournament.

Both Marianne and Verity have recently had sponsorship deals confirmed with Quad Roller Skate (Berlin) and are also recipients of Halo Sports Foundation Awards 2018.
