Extra Curricular Music

We endeavour to provide students every opportunity to take part in music making at whatever level, for fun and general musicianship. We also work closely with Encore (County Music Service) to encourage the representation in the town and county orchestra and bands. This is also true of the National Children’s and Youth Orchestra, where more experienced musicians can audition to become a member. We have also had students who are from Worcestshire perform with WYJO (Worcestershire Youth Jazz Orchestra).

Experiences on offer at St. Mary’s are included below.

Monday – Jazz Band with Mr Thomas, Tuesday – Recording Studio Sessions – for budding singers and instrumentalists, Wednesday – Brass Ensemble with Mr. Griffiths and Singing Club. On Thursday we have String Group with Mrs. Kinnaird and Woodwind Group with Mrs Coleman. On Fridays we have Flute Group with Mrs Daniels and Ortchestra with Mr. Thomas.

Students will always have a performance to aim for and these include the Christmas Carol Service, The Advent Fair, The Eisteddfod, Mass, Summer Lunchtime Concerts and the main Easter Cafod Concert. We have also performed at St. David’s Hall, Cardiff, Bemont Abbey and at the Upton Jazz Festival.

We were also happy to welcome members from the Hereford Gilbert and Sullivan Society who worked with Year 8 students on singing and acting and also as part of the Herefordshire Singing Strategy, where Year 7 joined singers from Bishop’s School to perform a number of pieces. We have also worked with partner schools to combine forces for different performances and religious occasions.
