Initial Teacher Training

Initial Teacher Training

St Mary’s RC High School has been closely involved in Initial Teacher Training through our association with The University of Gloucestershire since 1994.  In more recent years we have also developed very successful links with the University of Worcester and the University of the West of England.  In addition, St Mary’s has become a partner school with Hereteach Alliance.

St Mary’s has a proud tradition of ITT and has successfully helped to train many Herefordshire teachers, some of whom have become permanent members of staff at the school.  We pride ourselves in producing high quality teachers who are well-supported in the classroom.  ITT also increases staff expertise at St. Mary’s, by developing coaching and mentoring skills, as well as promoting innovation, collaboration and best practice.

PGCE Courses

A distinctive feature of the PGCE Secondary Programmes is the centrality of the school based training, during which trainees are provided with the opportunity to develop the skills of preparation, implementation and reflection within a secondary school context. Of the 36 weeks that make up the teacher training course, the majority of that time is spent in partnership schools.

Throughout the year, a trainee's experience in school is supported by taught strands and seminars at St. Mary’s and at the partnership institution.  In school, the taught strands are conducted by various members of staff with specialist skills and knowledge.  These may be experienced classroom teachers, recently qualified teachers, subject leaders, the SENDCO, teaching assistants, members of the Senior Leadership team, or the school Training Manager/Professional Mentor.

Please contact Emma Thomas, our Training Manager, if you would like to arrange to visit the school on 01432 850416 or by email ethomas@st-maryshigh.hereford.sch.uk
