Spring Term 2024

Dear Parent/Carer,

It has been a very busy spring term at St Mary's with lots of activity taking place both in and out of the classroom.

Over the weekend of the 1st and 2nd of February, the cast and crew put on three performances of 'Back to the Eighties' showcasing just how much talent we have at our school. The production was full of great songs and acting and the music was provided by our pupil band.  I really enjoyed seeing just how such fun the cast had, and think it is so important that we provide them with such opportunities.  I look forward to finding out what we'll be doing next and to the casting and rehearsals staring again!

We have also taken our pupils to ‘Young Voices’ in Birmingham and to a ‘Wicked’ workshop designed to support their mental and physical wellbeing.

At the end of the recent half-term break, our annual ski trip returned safely after a week of great skiing. The staff and pupils had a brilliant time on the slopes as the daily updates on our website show.

As you will see within this newsletter, we have also enjoyed a significant amount of sporting success and amongst a number of notable performances, our U15 Hockey team were crowned county champions after going undefeated in the recent tournament. We have a comprehensive extra-curricular sporting offer at the moment with various fixtures and practices on most nights of the week. If your son or daughter is not currently involved and would like to be, they can speak to any member of the PE Department for more information.

Since returning after Christmas, our Y11s have been focused on addressing the gaps that the mock exams highlighted in December. If your child is in Y11, please see our revision support timetable and details on the website. There are lots of sessions to choose from, some of which are targeted at certain tiers, topics or groups, and I would urge Y11 to make best use of them in the run up to the GCSEs. May I remind you that we also offer a mini-bus drop off in town after the revision sessions for those pupils who are unable to be collected. The next few weeks will pass very quickly and we will be encouraging Y11 to access as much support as they can – there are also Easter revision sessions being delivered by some departments, more details to follow.

We continue to monitor the quality of provision across the school very closely with Department Reviews in Music, Business Studies, RE, MFL, History, Computer Science, Geography, Maths and PE to date.

It has been really good seeing you at our recent parents’ evenings and I hope you have found them to be both helpful and informative. We also had our Options Evening recently and we will continue to do all that we can to support our Y9’s in making the right choices for them with their forthcoming GCSE subjects. We appreciate that these are big decisions and in addition to interviews and assemblies, we have had a range of employers into school to talk to the year group.

On the first Friday of every month we have voluntary mass in the chapel. Father Augustine from Belmont Abbey came to celebrate on St David’s day, and it was wonderful to see the chapel full with pupils from across the year groups.

May I take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Easter and a restful break.  Thank you for your ongoing support.

Best wishes

BACK TO THE 80s

Over the weekend of 2nd and 3rd February, our pupils delivered a dazzling rendition of the musical "Back to the 80's" which they had been rehearsing throughout the autumn and spring term.  Back to the 80's is a jukebox style musical, with the story set in an American High School punctuated by well known songs from the 1980s.

The production involved nearly 70 pupils in the cast, live band, tech and backstage crew.  They worked really hard transporting rubix cubes and performed to good-sized audiences at 3 shows well known songs and dance moves in an array of neon costumes and leg warmers, making references to Star Wars and Karate Kid!

But perhaps the most memorable aspect of the production was the sheer joy and camaraderie radiating from the performers on stage.  It was evident that the pupils were having the 'time of their lives', their enthusiasm infectious, leaving smiles on the faces of all who attended.

WICKED WORKSHOP

In February, pupils from years 9-11 were lucky to be invited to take part in a well-being workshop in Hereford run by the Wicked team as they are currently touring in Bristol.  In the workshop, pupils learnt about some breathing techniques to help with well-being, as well as ways to feel empowered and strong in what they do.  This was also combined with learning a song from Wicked that they performed with pupils from other schools.  They had a 'Wicked' time!

YOUNG VOICES

On 22nd February, 40 members of the school choir went to Young Voices in Birmingham.  It was another exciting event, singing a variety of songs from many different genres with 4000 other school children!  We also sang with rapper MC Grammar, drumming prodigy Nandi Bushell and singer Natalie Williams.  The pupils really enjoyed themselves, singing and dancing enthusiastically all night!

GALA CONCERT

We were very proud of Adam in year 7 who was invited to play at the festival Gala concert on Thursday 14th March due to his very high score – he performed brilliantly to a full house at The Courtyard amongst other chosen acts from the music, dance and drama competitions.

ROWING

This year saw the introduction of rowing at St Mary's.  Hereford Rowing Club kindly offered to run 2 taster sessions for Y7 and Y8 pupils after school.  The pupils were excited and focused as they enjoyed a tour of the club, introduction to technique and virtual races on the ergo rowing machines.  Well done to all involved and thank you to Hereford Rowing Club.

INTER HOUSE GAMES

Inter house games day was a roaring success. Every pupil and staff member at St Mary's was included in this celebration of sport. We were blessed with great weather  and the pupils' sportsmanship and participation were clear too see. DePaul were victorious in the end but I have been assured this has only motivated the other houses for success in 2025!

Sporting Success Stories

Year 11 County Basketball Semi-Final win against Whitecross.

Year 7A and Year 9A Football - County School league, both year groups secured a win against Aylestone.

Congratulations to St Mary’s Cross Country team who represented Hereford Schools with Distinction at the County Cross Country Championships held at Bromsgrove School, and in particular to Tom who came 4th in the Intermediate Boys race, and in doing so has qualified for the Nationals for the second year in a row.

SKI TRIP 2024

Pupils and staff enjoyed a fantastic time in Auffach, Austria on our annual ski trip.  It is amazing to watch the beginners start their learning journey on the Gloucester dry ski slope, move to the nursery slopes and then, by the end of the week, skiing with confidence from the top to the bottom of the mountain.  The intermediate and advanced skiers also made great progress, skiing across to Inneralpbach and Alpbach to some challenging red and black slopes.  As well as the skiing, we enjoyed some tobogganing, quiz, games, Mr Yearnshire’s adventure walk and a farm tour led by our hosts.  The behaviour, attitude and manners of our pupils were an absolute credit to our school and we look forward to next year's trip.

HISTORY

A group of keen historians are submitting reviews for the Historical Association Young Quills competition, a competition for published historical fiction for children and young adults (14+).

The HA’s aim is to seek out books which:

  • Are a ‘good read’, engaging the imagination of the young reader.
  • Have good historical content and factual information.
  • Have history as a component of the story, not just a convenient backdrop or setting.
  • Inspire young readers to find out more about that historical period or people.

Divided by age suitability, the books are given to pupils on the condition that they write a review of the book. Those reviews are used as the basis for the HA to create the shortlist from which the winners will be selected. The pupils will be submitting their reviews by Easter and some will be published on the Historical Association’s website.

HOSPITALITY & CATERING

Year 10 pupils spent the day at Hereford & Ludlow College where they were given the opportunity to make a four-course meal.  They worked alongside the catering students using their commercial kitchen.  They worked exceptionally hard all day and the experience has developed their practical skills in the subject.

WORLD BOOK DAY

At St Mary’s we recognise the vital importance of literacy for improving opportunities and encourage our students to develop a love of reading. As Sir Martyn Oliver said: ‘Reading is the gateway to wider learning.’ We recently celebrated World Book Day where staff and students partook in a range of activities and challenges throughout the day, including quizzes and competitions such as ‘Guess the Literary Character’ from the impressive array embodied by our staff. Can you name them all?
